158346 - Periodic restart of work processes

Symptom
Due to memory leaks, the memory requirement increases over time. This
may affect work processes or software used by the application server
(for example, DB shadow processes).

Other Terms
noptime, wp_auto_restart

Reason and Prerequisites
Memory leaks occur if allocated memory is no longer released.

Solution
Since memory leaks are non-critical with regard to the server, you can periodically restart the SAP work processes as a workaround until these leaks have been solved. You can configure this using the parameters rdisp/noptime and rdisp/wp_auto_restart:
  • rdisp/noptime: refers to the time span after which each work process is started and executes an 'empty' operation (NOP - no Operation).
  • rdisp/wp_auto_restart: defines a time span after which a work process is restarted automatically.

By default, neither NOP nor Restart are active. This means that both parameters must be set for the automatic restart.

If you choose a smaller value for the rdisp/noptime parameter, the possible time interval for the restart is reduced. However, note that due to this fact, work processes are unnecessarily started.
