How to change - Enabling Virtual Background on Zoom

How to change Google Zoom Virtual background

Google Zoom using Canva background creation

In order to create a customised virtual background for your Zoom meeting, you can use the Canva tool. As a result, let's dive deeper into how you can do it below, along with potential problems and solutions.

Virtual backgrounds can be changed before, during and after sessions, meetings etc. OR they can be set up in the background image settings.
We have the option of choosing our own image or one of Zoom's defaults. If you want to look professional, this is for you. If you want to look unprofessional, this is for you as well.

Some steps to do it

To enable the Virtual Background feature for all users in the account:

  1. To edit account settings, you must be logged in as an administrator on Zoom's website.
  2. Click Account Management and then Account Settings in the navigation menu.
  3. The Virtual Background option (under the Meeting (Advanced) section) can be found in the Meeting tab. Make sure it is turned on in the Meeting tab.
  4. The toggle switch must be clicked to enable the setting. Verify the change by selecting Turn On if a verification dialogue appears.
  5. By clicking the lock icon and clicking Lock, you can make this setting mandatory for all users in your account.
  6. Check this box if you want to. Assign videos as background videos, then click Save to confirm the change. Your users will now have access to video background videos.
  7. Check this box if you want to. Add the option for users to upload their own virtual backgrounds, then Save the change to confirm. This will allow your users to upload their own virtual backgrounds in addition to the ones already uploaded.
  8. By clicking on "Manage Virtual Background", you have the option of uploading a user-friendly default background.
  9. Client/app version 5.1.1 or higher is required for users to see the background images you upload on their computer or device.

Troubleshooting virtual background issues

Problems with Virtual Background can be resolved by following these troubleshooting tips:

  • If the Virtual Background tab does not appear in your desktop client settings after enabling it, sign out and sign back in.
  • Make sure you manually select the background colour to ensure that it's the right shade of blue. This option is only available after you have clicked on an image and selected a green screen.
  • Check to see if the background is a solid colour with minimal shadows before you start your project. A uniformly lit background is also a must. It's best to use a three-point lighting setup.
  • Check that the colour of your green screen does not match your shirt, hair, or eye colour before you start filming.
  • As a VDI user, you may find that some plugins do not support virtual backgrounds, and less powerful thin client machines may not be able to take advantage of the feature either. Support for additional VDI platforms is in the works, and customers are encouraged to check with their sales representative for the latest information.
