When I first installed TREX to support our Enterprise Portal’s search capabilities, I quickly realized that installation alone wasn’t enough — I had to properly register TREX within the portal environment to make it functional. Here’s how I did it, and what you should watch out for.
🧩 Step 1: Locate the TREX Name Server and Port
After installing TREX, the first thing I needed was the name server address and port number. I found this in the TREX configuration files — specifically in sapprofile.ini located in the TREX installation directory (e.g., C:\usr\sap\trex_00\). The default port is usually 30001, but it can vary depending on your setup.
🛠️ Step 2: Open the J2EE Visual Administrator
To register TREX with the portal, I launched the Visual Administrator tool from the J2EE engine. On our system, it was located in `C:\usr\sap
\[SID]\JC##\j2ee\admin. I rango.bat` to start the tool and logged in with administrator credentials.
⚙️ Step 3: Configure the TREX Service
Inside Visual Administrator, I navigated to:
Global Configuration → Services → TREX Service
There, I edited the nameserver.address property. I entered the host name of the TREX server and the port number I had retrieved earlier. After updating the value, I saved the configuration and restarted the TREX service to apply the changes.
🔍 Step 4: Verify TREX Connection in the Portal
Once TREX was registered, I logged into the SAP Enterprise Portal with super-admin rights and went to:
System Administration → Monitoring → Knowledge Management → TREX Monitor → Server Status
Here, I checked the status of the HTTP Server, Name Server, Queue Server, and Index Server. All components showed as “Available,” confirming that TREX was successfully registered and communicating with the portal.
🧠 Final Thoughts
Registering TREX in the portal isn’t just a checkbox — it’s a critical step to ensure your search and classification features work seamlessly. Make sure you double-check your port settings, restart services properly, and always validate the connection through the TREX Monitor.
